Board Bios: 2007 - 2008

Michael Tardif, Secretary

Tardif began his career as a project architect designing single-family homes, multi-family homes, health care facilities, and office buildings for architecture firms in Boston and New Jersey. A passion for computer technology led to a position on the national staff of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as director of the Center for Technology and Practice Management. Midway through his five-year tenure at the AIA, Tardiff was asked to edit the technology chapters of The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice, 13th edition, and soon found himself editing and writing full-time, eventually writing or editing over 250 AIA Best Practices articles.

Tardif left the AIA to join ZweigWhite, a specialty trade publisher serving the building design and construction industry. He edited four ZweigWhite professional/technical books, including the Insiders Guide to SF330 Preparation, a comprehensive guide for architects and engineers on federal procurement of professional design services.

In January 2005, Tardif launched his freelance writing and editing career, focusing exclusively on topics related to the built environment. He is a regular columnist or contributor to Washingtonian, AIArchitect, and New Old House magazines. His first book, Financial Management for Design Professionals: The Path to Profitability, co-authored with Steve Wintner, was published by Kaplan Publishing in December 2006. He is currently collaborating with Deke Smith on his second book, Building Information Modeling: A Strategic Implementation Guide for Architects, Engineers, Constructors, and Real Estate Asset Managers, to be published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. in early 2009.
