Board Bios: 2007 - 2008

David O. Stewart, Board Member

Stewart's first book, The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution, was released in April and has been a Washington Post best-seller. A trial lawyer for twenty-five years, most of them with Ropes & Gray in Washington, D.C., David has defended accused criminals, challenged government action as unconstitutional, and argued appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court. He was lead defense counsel in a Senate impeachment trial.

Stewart’s writing life began as a reporter for the Staten Island Advance and included almost ten years of monthly columns on the Supreme Court for the American Bar Association Journal. In recent years, Stewart has turned to fiction writing, publishing a short story (When They Did It) in New Millennium Writings, which was nominated for the Pushcart Prize. His novel is currently represented by Philippa Brophy of Sterling Lord Literistic in New York.

Stewart's current project is a book on the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson, which has a target publication date in 2009. David is president of the Freedom to Write Fund, a nonprofit affiliate of WIW, which engages in education and advocacy on behalf of writers’ issues, and is vice president of the Friends of the Library of Montgomery County.
